In the history of reggae, King Tubby elevated sound engineering into an art form. He possessed the unique ability to create something out of nothing. Seeing music spatially, he could manipulate instrumentation through the mixing board omni-directionally, creating a whole sub-genre of music known as dub.
Because he was so well known for his mixing skills, his magic touch can be heard on many of his contemporaries rhythms. His mixing techniques would ultimately become so influential that they are regarded as a template for much of today’s reggae music production.
’GENIUS’ is written all over the astrological chart of King Tubby, born January 28, 1941 on the light side of an Aquarius new moon. Aquarius is the sign that represents the inventor, innovator, nonconformist. They are individualistic, unconventional, revolutionary, eccentric. On this day Mercury, the planet that represents the conscious and rational mind, was also traveling in Aquarius, describing an individual who thinks outside the box and does not conform to established rules, conventional restraints.
To underscore and magnify his Aquarian nature, Uranus, the planet ruling the sign Aquarius, was powerfully placed in the cosmos. Known as the ‘maverick’ planet—unpredictable, electrifying, ingenious—Uranus was standing stationary direct. In other words, it appeared to be motionless, and so exerted enormous impact on the astrological chart.
